Truman to develop second Fairmont hotel in Calgary

Home-town developer now has four major hotel projects in the Alberta city

Fairmont logo.Fairmont Calgary, a new 225-room hotel that will also include 100 branded residences, is the latest addition to the hospitality development list of Calgary's Truman Development.

If all goes as planned, the hotel is expected to open in Alberta’s largest city in the fourth quarter of 2031.

The project is a partnership between luxury hospitality brand Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, part of the Accor hospitality group that has more than 5,700 properties in more than 110 countries, and Truman.

“Adding a second property in this flourishing city where the beloved Fairmont Palliser currently resides will be a significant achievement, and reinforces Fairmont’s leadership position in Western Canada, as well as strengthens our long-term brand commitment to Calgary as a destination,” Fairmont chief executive officer Omer Acar said in a media release.

“Fairmont Calgary will become an exciting new social hub for the local community, hotel guests and residents alike, blending both tradition and modernity.”

While not all details about the project have been released, the downtown mixed-use location will also include a spa and wellness offering as well as a meetings and events program.

BMO Centre a boost for Calgary tourism

Fairmont Calgary is a direct beneficiary of the Stampede Park transformation project, a major revitalization of Calgary’s Culture + Entertainment District centred around the government-funded, $500-million expansion of its BMO Centre, which was completed in 2024.

BMO Centre has created Western Canada's largest convention facility and spun off infrastructure upgrades, new public spaces and improved transit access to attract more events and visitors to the area.

BMO Centre hosted upwards of 325 events in 2025, including 47 first-time conferences, and more than 200 major events are booked between now and 2032.

Calgary had more than 8.7 million visitors in 2025, with expectations for more this year due to increased conferences and international travel.

Truman developments in Calgary

Truman has been developing commercial and residential properties in Calgary and its surrounding areas for more than 35 years and has more recently moved into the hospitality sector.

Truman has an agreement with Marriott International, Inc. to develop three other Calgary hotels: The Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park; W Calgary; and JW Marriott Calgary.

While W Calgary and JW Marriott Calgary are in the regulatory approvals process, construction has just begun on the 13-storey, 320-room, NORR-designed The Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park.

Its amenities will include:

  • 15,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space;
  • 14,000 square feet of food and beverage offerings, including restaurants, a lobby bar, a coffee shop and a rooftop lounge;
  • a terrace with an activity pool, hot tub and outdoor bar;
  • an indoor swimming pool; and
  • a fitness club.

The 69-storey W Calgary will feature 157 guest rooms, including 27 suites, and 239 branded residences. Amenities, which will be available to both hotel guests and residents, will include: a 7,500-square-foot spa; a specialty restaurant; 16,259 square feet of meeting space; the brand’s signature Living Room lobby lounge; a fitness studio; and a rooftop bar.

The 62-storey JW Marriott Calgary will offer 248 guest rooms and 120 branded residences. Its amenities will include: 32,500 square feet of meeting space; an indoor and outdoor pool; a take-out cafe-style restaurant; a garden; and retail space.

The combined $1.47 billion in private investment in the three hotels and residences will support more than 9,100 jobs during construction and should provide more than 2,000 ongoing positions across operations and the tourism sector upon completion.

Truman expects the three developments will contribute more than $120 million in gross domestic product from hotel operations and an additional $111 million from visitor spending, generating nearly $76 million in government revenues.
