Healthcare workforce housing project advances in Mission

Mission Bridgehead Investment Corporation (MBIC), with the City of Mission as its shareholder, is advancing the Homes for Health workforce housing project in Mission, BC. The project will provide dedicated, purpose-built rental housing for healthcare professionals working at Mission Memorial Hospital and across Mission’s local healthcare system.

The proposed development will include 14 fully furnished rental homes, with a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. The building is designed to meet the practical needs of healthcare workers by offering pet-friendly accommodation, utilities and Wi-Fi included, and flexible rental options for both locum practitioners and long-term tenants. Resident amenities will also support wellbeing, connection, and convenience.

Located within 150 metres of Mission Memorial Hospital, Homes for Health will provide healthcare workers with the opportunity to live close to their primary place of employment. Shorter commute times can reduce daily stress, improve work-life balance, and support a higher quality of life for residents. Stable, local housing can also reduce reliance on long-distance commuting, helping improve day-to-day workforce reliability and continuity within the healthcare system.

The project is intended to support the recruitment, retention, and long-term stability of Mission’s healthcare workforce. As housing availability increasingly affects the ability of communities to attract physicians, nurses, and other essential healthcare professionals, Homes for Health represents a practical local response to an urgent community need.

“This project will be a focal point of healthy living by providing housing for our health care professionals but also care put into the physical materials and plan parti. It all works together to contribute to healthier living in Mission,” said Chelsea Mueller, Architect AAA AIBC MRAIC, Owner, The Nerdy Architect.

MBIC was incorporated in April 2024, and Homes for Health is its first development project. In addition to advancing this healthcare workforce housing initiative, MBIC is exploring development opportunities associated with the City’s Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan as well as other municipal land holdings that will be transferred to MBIC.

We are also looking at the City’s Waterfront Revitalization Master Plan and how we can advance the redevelopment of one of the largest underdeveloped Fraser River waterfronts in the Lower Mainland,” said Bindi Watts, Interim CEO, MBIC. “We look forward to exploring opportunities with experienced private-sector development partners who share our commitment to delivering high-quality projects that create lasting economic, social, and community value for Mission.”

The Homes for Health project has received the full endorsement of Mayor and Council in recognition of its importance to Mission’s healthcare system and broader community wellbeing. The City has also supported the project through the waiver of applicable Development Cost Charges and Amenity Cost Charges. This municipal support recognizes the project’s unique public-purpose value and its role in addressing an urgent priority for the community.

The proposed development advances several objectives of the City’s Official Community Plan, including promoting health and inclusive living, supporting housing choice, encouraging active transportation, and advancing climate action through compact development. Its location near the hospital and transit services will help reduce vehicle dependency while supporting walking, cycling, and other transportation choices.

A rezoning and development permit application was submitted to the City of Mission in August 2026 through the City’s Development FastTrack program. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for late 2028. The project is expected to create local employment and support the local construction sector throughout the development process.

MBIC is the City of Mission’s municipal development corporation and operates at arm’s length from the City. MBIC is dedicated to advancing community and economic development in Mission through strategic revitalization projects and development partnerships that prioritize local interests.
