Ottawa-based Minto Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust is employing a double-edged strategy to grow the REIT, purchasing two existing buildings in Calgary and financing a redevelopment in Ottawa – with an eye to purchasing the site in the future.
Greybrook, Marlin Spring expand investment venture
The partnership between Greybrook Realty Partners and Marlin Spring continues to flourish, most recently with their Nov. 29 acquisition of two rental townhome apartment complexes in Houston. Marlin Spring CEO Ben Bakst said the opportunity to make the latest US$68-million purchase that’s part of the value-add program the two Toronto-based companies have undertaken arose through contacts made by Cleveland-raised Avi Jakobowitch, president of Marlin Spring US Realty, who has ties with American brokers and financing sources.
CAPREIT, ECREIT to create European-focused, multi-res REIT
UPDATE: Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust is selling 41 multi-residential properties in The Netherlands to European Commercial REIT in a transaction which will see CAPREIT also become its majority shareholder. If all aspects of the $634-million deal are approved, ECREIT will change its name to ERES and be Canada’s first European-focused, multi-residential REIT.
Ivanhoé, Claridge create second Quebec investment fund
Ivanhoé Cambridge and Claridge will expand on an investment partnership launched two years ago, adding a second $100-million vehicle for real estate projects in Quebec urban centres, with a focus on Montreal and Quebec City. The two partners, which both have a strong presence in Quebec, will continue investing alongside local developers.
Six months ago: Cameron Developments the ‘100-year-old’ company
South Edmonton Common, the project that put Edmonton’s Cameron Developments on the map, opened the doors of its first retail big box 20 years ago. The retailer was Home Depot. Since then, Cameron has built out the 320-acre power centre with 2.3 million square feet of retail development. Today, Cameron has 14 developments under way.
One year ago: China’s Greenland builds Lakeside Residences
Toronto’s East Bayfront will receive its latest injection of new life with Lakeside Residences by Greenland Group. The 3.85-acre site will be “transformed into a master-planned community with seven towers and upwards of 2,000 new residential units and over 30,000 square feet of retail space,” according to Amanda Ireland of Milborne Group, which oversees marketing and sales.
