Minto Apartment REIT (MI-UN-T) has announced Michael Waters will vacate his management responsibilities at the REIT to focus on his role as Minto Group CEO. Jonathan Li will step up from his current roles as the REIT's president and COO to become president and CEO.
Waters will continue to serve as a trustee of the REIT.
Since joining the REIT in April 2022, Li has overseen all aspects of its real estate portfolio and operations and has led the teams overseeing the firm's asset management, development, property operations and investor relations. He has also played a leading role in executing its strategy and business plan, including capital allocation, balance sheet management and human resources.
This constitutes a major step in the REIT's long-term internalization process, with both the CEO and CFO functions being fully internalized.
Li will join Eddie Fu, the REIT's chief financial officer, as full-time C-suite executives of the REIT and will direct overall strategy, operations development, capital allocation, asset management and balance sheet management.
Luthman, Apps promoted at Hines
Hines announced Steve Luthman has been promoted to chief executive officer of the U.S. Midwest and Southeast regions and Canada, and Syl Apps has been promoted to chief executive officer South America.
Since joining Hines in 2005, Luthman has contributed to the development, acquisition, financing, marketing and disposition of more than 33 million square feet of commercial real estate in the Midwest, Southeast and Canada.
He led the capital formation for two Canada-specific discretionary investment vehicles comprising nearly $3 billion of investment capital.
Additionally, he spearheaded Hines’ mass-timber product, T3, which now has 26 projects globally either completed, underway, or in conception totalling five million square feet.
Apps joined Hines in 2015 and has been responsible for the origination, capitalization and execution of over $1.3 billion worth of projects in Canada.
He has also served as an investment partner for the Hines Brazil team since 2018, overseeing the equity capital formation of more than $471 million Cdn, including several investment vehicles.
He will also continue to lead the firm’s investment business in Canada.
PSP Investments names Duff, Marc to senior roles
Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) has named Oliver Duff its senior vice-president, global head of credit investments, and Simon Marc as senior vice-president, global head of private equity and strategic partnerships.
Duff and Marc will both join the PSP Investments' executive committee.
Duff has more than 25 years of experience in leverage finance. Previously senior managing director and global head of credit investments, he joined PSP Investments in September 2016.
Previously, he was global head of leveraged finance and European head of capital financing at HSBC Bank PLC.
He has also held roles as head of loan syndicate at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs and began his career with Bankers Trust in London.
Duff is a graduate of Exeter University and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
Marc has over 25 years of investment experience in private equity. Previously senior managing director, global head of private equity, he joined PSP Investments in August 2015 as managing director, private equity.
Prior to joining PSP Investments, he was principal at Permira and Apax Partners, in addition to previous experience at Goldman Sachs. Marc is a graduate of the HEC School of Management, Paris.
Dawson head of global capital markets at Colliers
Colliers (CIGI-T) announced the appointment of Luke Dawson as head of global capital markets. Dawson will set the strategic agenda for Colliers Capital Markets.
In addition to his new mandate, he will retain his existing role as capital markets leader for EMEA.
Dawson brings almost two decades of experience to the role, having joined Colliers in 2004 as director of corporate development with a focus on M&A activity.
Dawson then held several leadership roles within the Colliers capital markets business including business development, client engagement, investment sales and overall leadership across Central and Eastern European region.
Most recently, he served as managing director of cross-border capital markets.
Slate appoints six partners, managing directors
Slate Asset Management has announced six new partners and managing director promotions. Jerry Cain becomes a partner, while Brendan Shanahan, Connor O’Brien, Katie Fong, Marc-André Flageole and Molly Mahoney become managing directors.
Cain joined Slate in 2020 and brings over 15 years of experience in capital raising and distribution to the firm’s investor relations team. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College and an MBA from Northeastern University.
Shanahan joined Slate in 2021 and oversees debt investment origination and execution in the Midwest and Western U.S. He holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor of science in Civil Engineering from Columbia University.
O’Brien has been with Slate since 2012 and oversees the origination and execution of acquisitions and dispositions across the U.S. He holds an honours business administration degree from the Richard Ivey Business School at Western University.
Fong joined Slate in 2014 in institutional separate accounts. In 2021, she assumed leadership of Slate’s Canadian private real estate team. She holds an honours business administration degree from the Ivey Business School at Western University.
Flageole becomes managing director, public markets and head of Presima. He joined Slate in 2022 as global portfolio manager and head of investments for Presima. He holds a master of finance and a bachelor of business administration from HEC Montreal and is FRM certified and a CFA.
Mahoney joined Slate in 2020, bringing over 13 years of experience in capital raising and marketing alternative products and services to the firm’s investor relations function. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laud.
Stewart, So join Nicola Wealth
Nicola Wealth appointed Nigel Stewart vice-president, institutional sales and Lucy So vice-president, institutional Sales and client relationship manager. Both will be based in Vancouver.
Stewart brings more than 23 years of experience to the newly created role.
Previously, he was managing director of sales at Arrow Capital's Vancouver office. He also held senior leadership positions as vice-president, sales with Scudder Maxxum and BPI Financial Corporation.
He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario.
So brings more than 12 years of experience in the wealth management and finance industry, previously working at Connor, Clark & Lunn Investment Management and Connor, Clark & Lunn Funds.
She is a graduate of the University of Alberta's School of Business and a CFA.
JLL hires workplace consulting team
JLL has hired a workplace consulting team for its project and development services business: Susan Chang, senior vice-president, workplace consulting, Curtis Kjinserdahl, director and Eddy Zhao, analyst.
They will specialize in real estate portfolio optimization, facility planning and programming, workplace strategy and change management.
Chang has almost 30 years of experience working on and leading teams on multi-faceted, complex projects. She most recently served as principal and director of consulting at a large architecture and design company in Canada. Chang had responsibility for the global consulting portfolio.
Foch takes on director role at RARE
RARE Real Estate Inc. has appointed Daniel Foch as director of economic research. Foch is a real estate broker who has worked in the industry for over 15 years with several organizations including InterRent REIT, CBRE and Hydro One.
During his academic career, Foch was an active instructor, contributor and researcher in the University of Guelph's Real Estate Faculty, founder of The University's International URECC event, and was awarded for affordable housing innovation by CMHC & The University of Guelph.
