Cannabis retailers face varying models across Canada
Canada’s new recreational cannabis industry is set to boost retail opportunities around the country, but it’s becoming increasingly clear those businesses and their products will not be consistently available across Canada. Varying retail regulations and business models within the provinces and territories are making some markets more attractive than others, experts say.
CaraCo Group a dominant player in Kingston, Ont.
The CaraCo Group of Companies was founded in Kingston, Ont. in 1959 by Ann and Cornell “Case” Blommestyn as a building and renovation company. CaraCo has grown into five branches since then, and the family-owned company has expanded from its eastern Ontario base into Florida. It has also reached outside the bonds of family and hand-picked a CEO.
EY monitoring Walton’s Ottawa and Edmonton lands
Proposals are being sought for the sale of, or investment in, industrial lands in Edmonton and pre-development lands in Ottawa once held by Walton International Group Inc. Debt restructuring proceedings for Calgary-based Walton International Group Inc., the Walton Group of Companies’ main Canadian operating entity, and some of its affiliates started on April 28, 2017 through court-ordered protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).
Halifax office vacancies remain high, though dropping
Halifax’s office vacancy rate is still high, despite creeping down from a year ago, and net rental rates have also dropped, according to the latest rental surveys by Turner Drake & Partners Ltd. “Demand will catch up eventually or supply and demand will come back into balance in one form or another,” said Alexandra Baird Allen, senior manager of economic intelligence for the Halifax-based firm.

Six months ago: eStruxture makes big move onto data centre scene
Montreal’s eStruxture Data Centers has raised or secured $260 million in capital in recent months and forged relationships with several major investors as it moves to position itself as a key player in the emerging sector. Most recently, eStruxture secured $180 million in committed capital in mid-January with the addition of Fengate Real Asset Investments as a co-lead investor.
