The property landscape in Ontario is constantly changing. Last year, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) added more than $42.7 billion in new assessment, with commercial and industrial properties making more than $5.7 billion of the total.
As part of its extensive data collection program, MPAC annually collects information from income-generating properties. Our annual Property Income and Expense Return initiative requests information from over 35,000 eligible properties in Ontario, including commercial and industrial properties, golf courses, hotels, motels, mixed-use properties, and multi-residential properties.
By collecting information annually, MPAC’s income valuation experts can carefully review and monitor trends in revenue, expenses, capital investments, fair market rents, vacancies, and other factors while maintaining accurate property inventories.
You may be wondering, who is MPAC, and why do they collect this information? MPAC is responsible for establishing and maintaining the assessments for over 5.7 million properties in Ontario. Our role is to accurately assess and classify all properties in Ontario in compliance with the Assessment Act and regulations set by the Government of Ontario. Learn more about MPAC’s Authority to Collect Information.
The information we collect supports our work to maintain accurate property information, deliver quality assessments, and help us better understand ongoing changes in Ontario’s property landscape. Having complete, accurate, current market and property data is vital to the valuation process. This helps us establish quality assessments and deliver annual assessment rolls to all Ontario municipalities, which are used to distribute municipal taxes required to fund essential community services.
This year, our new property information request letters were mailed to eligible property owners in May 2025. We’ve refreshed our information request letters to streamline how property details, requested information, and submission instructions are displayed, so finding what you need including MPAC AboutMyProperty login credentials is easier and faster than ever. The submission deadline for the campaign is July 14, 2025.
