Canadian cities to lead N.A. industrial rent growth: C & W
Momentum picked up in the North American industrial real estate market in 2017, and strong fundamentals bode well for that continuing through the next two years. “I really think that industrial is now the darling of the real estate industry, particularly since the oil price decline,” said Stuart Barron, Cushman & Wakefield’s national research director for Canadian markets, who contributed to the new “North American Industrial Forecast Report 2018-2019.”
CPPIB, partners buy US$1.1B student housing portfolio
UPDATED WITH COMMENT FROM CPPIB: Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), in a joint venture with The Scion Group and GIC, has added “significant scale” to its student housing portfolio with the US$1.1B purchase of 22 U.S. properties. The portfolio, comprised of about 13,666 beds at 20 American universities in 18 states, represents a mix of recently developed class-A properties that also includes a selection of value-added assets.

Six months ago: Kingridge Square JV a first for Fortress
Kingridge Square, which started as a planned high-rise apartment development, has morphed into Fortress Real Developments Inc.’s first foray into the commercial condominium market. Fortress and Kingridge Developments are partners at the site in Oakville, Ont. The 4.95-acre property includes four buildings with unit sizes ranging from approximately 1,000 to 1,600 square feet.
One year ago: Apartment buy a Dutch treat for CAPREIT
Although “Canadian” is the key identifier in CAPREIT’s corporate name (Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust), the apartment operator is not shy about looking beyond the borders of its home country. A few years ago it shrewdly identified Ireland as a country poised to enjoy an economic bounce back within the European Union and late last month it expanded to the Netherlands.
