Holloway Lodging to build residential towers in Ottawa
Holloway Lodging Corp.’s plan to build residential towers in Ottawa is a departure from the sector in which the company made its name, but that doesn’t mean it is making a significant shift in focus. The proposal for Holloway’s west Ottawa property on Carling Avenue, where a Travelodge Hotel currently sits, would take place in two phases.

Greater Victoria’s industrial vacancy rate continues to drop as demand to buy and lease workspace in the region outstrips the pace of new supply. Industrial vacancy fell from 2.4 per cent in 2017 to a decade-low of 1.71 per cent in 2018, according to Colliers International’s summer 2018 regional industrial market report.

Zibi building a ‘there there’ in Ottawa, Gatineau
PART II: It will take a decade to build-out Ottawa and Gatineau’s massive mixed-use Zibi site, but its developers are already building a live-work-play downtown community. Zibi president Jeff Westeinde says there will be homes, retail/professionals, entertainment, offices, public spaces and hotels on the 37-acre property within a couple of years.
10 startups attend first Colliers PropTech Accelerator
Ten startup property technology companies from seven countries are the first successful applicants for the Colliers PropTech Accelerator program. Colliers International Group Inc. teamed up with Techstars to launch the first-of-its-kind program, which received applications from hundreds of companies in about 50 countries.
JLL platform used in feds’ Smart Buildings initiative
JLL Canada and RYCOM were selected by Public Services and Procurement Canada to implement a Smart Buildings initiative in federal buildings early this year, and it’s already yielding positive results. “The overall program is already achieving up to 15 per cent energy savings amounting to over $2.7 million of energy saving annually,” said JLL Canada managing director of sustainability Jiri Skopek.
Six months ago: CT REIT to build on strong 2017: Silver
CT Real Estate Investment Trust is poised to continue expanding its portfolio after experiencing growth in every significant financial metric during 2017, says president and CEO Ken Silver. Silver told RENX that after adding 1.5 million square feet of mainly retail space last year, the REIT remains interested in adding industrial and distribution assets to its portfolio.

Daily headlines of doom and gloom in Canadian retail might be overblown, according to panelists discussing the sector at the 14th annual RealREIT conference in Toronto on Thursday. “Retail has always had turmoil,” said OneREIT CEO Richard Michaeloff. “It has always changed. You look back over time, retailers have come and gone. You had downtown stores and then suburban stores. You had Walmart come in . . . there has always been lots of change.”
