Flatt named chair at Brookfield as Carney departs; new MD at Slate

Brookfield Asset Management (BAM-T) has appointed Bruce Flatt as chair of its board of directors, taking over from Mark Carney who stepped down to enter politics and run for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. 

Flatt joined Brookfield in 1990 and became the company's chief executive officer in 2002. He received his education at the University of Manitoba.

Under Flatt's leadership, Brookfield has built a portfolio of over $1 trillion in assets under management, and has an operating presence in more than 30 countries.

In addition to his roles with Brookfield, Flatt has served on numerous company board of directors during the past three decades.

Carney, who previously led both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is vying to replace Justin Trudeau as the leader of Canada's governing party. During his time leading national banks, he helped the two nations through the 2008 financial crisis and the Brexit transition, respectively.

He also worked as UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance, and served as advisor to both the Trudeau governmental and the Labour party in the U.K. Carney was educated at Harvard and Oxford.

Brookfield — until recently headquartered in Toronto — today manages assets in such areas as renewable energy and real estate and is now based in New York. Over its portfolio of properties in Canada, the company manages 18 million square including First Canadian Place in Toronto and Suncor Energy Centre in Calgary.

New managing director for Slate

Slate Asset Management recently announced the promotion of Steven Dejonckheere to managing director. Dejonckheere will lead Slate’s global development team and oversee the company’s various development projects.

He joined Slate in 2019 in the firm’s Toronto office. Today, he oversees all aspects of development across a portfolio of around 12 million square feet and spanning multiple asset classes across North America. 

Among other projects, Dejonckheere is currently overseeing Steelport, an 800-acre industrial land redevelopment on Hamilton’s waterfront, expected to generate $3.8 billion in economic value.

Dejonckheere was educated at Clemson University and Columbia University. 

Before joining Slate, Dejonckheere managed a development portfolio at Triovest with projects in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. He has also held development positions at Capital Developments and Dream Unlimited, and prior to his career in Canadian real estate, he worked for SCB Architects in Chicago.

Drukarsh joins Hyyve board of directors

Hyyve recently welcomed Howard Drukarsh to its advisory board. Drukarsh is co-founder of Right at Home Realty, which he helped create in 2004 with partners Arthur Bartram and Ronald E. Peddicord

Hyvve is a tech-based online brokerage which includes more than 6,000 sales representatives.

Drukarsh has also been the host of the Real Estate with Howard Drukarsh podcast, engaging with industry leaders to discuss current trends and insights in the real estate market. He also served on the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) board of directors and the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB).

Hyyve enables homeowners to receive upfront payments for their property listings while connecting them with qualified real estate agents who bid for the right to sell their homes.

CFO Capital adds to leadership team 

Todd Kemp has joined CFO Capital as its managing director, Prairies and he will be based in Regina. 

Kemp has more than 20 years of experience specializing in commercial real estate financing.

Previously, he was director of syndications at Equitable Bank (formerly Concentra Bank), and managed a $1.5-billion commercial syndication desk tailored to the credit union system. 

Larcina joining Epic Investment

Epic Investment Services has named Jeffrey Larcina as vice-president, investments. 

He has more than 17 years experience in the real estate industry. Prior to joining Epic, Larcina worked with a Canadian Schedule I bank focusing on equity investments in industrial assets and development projects. 

Before that, he worked at real estate investment, management and leasing company BentallGreenOak (BGO) where he oversaw more than $2.5 billion in transactions.

Colliers taps Castelli in Quebec

Colliers Real Estate Management Services (REMS) recently hired Angelina Castelli as vice-president, Quebec region.

Castelli has real estate executive experience across operations, leasing, property management and tenant services and she will lead REMS’ 6.8 million square feet of industrial, office and retail assets in Quebec.

She joins Colliers after five years with Landmark Advisory Services as chief operations officer.

New growth leader at Groupe Brivia

Montreal-based developer and commercial real estate firm Groupe Brivia has chosen a new director of strategy and growth. Gary Julien has rejoined the company after three-and-a-half years at Dév Méta.

He originally joined Groupe Brivia in 2019, after previous stints with Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ and Ivanhoé Cambridge.

Goodman added to Shindico brokerage team

Murray Goodman is joining the Shindico brokerage team in Winnipeg as senior vice-president, industrial and investment.

With more than 20 years of commercial real estate experience, Goodman specializes in industrial and investment properties. His expertise spans negotiation, property valuation, investment sales, leasing and development, and he has recently completed more than $7 million in deals. 

Goodman previously held senior roles at Cushman & Wakefield Stevenson. He is a licensed broker in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

RJC names new principals, associates

RJC Engineers has announced the appointment of three new principals and four new associates to the company’s leadership stable. 

The firm’s leadership team now includes 55 principals and 55 associates as RJC marks 77 years in business.

New principals are Matthew Lipiec in Toronto, Jason Guldin and Sameer Hasham in Victoria. New associates are: Craig Dunham and Nensi Baboci in Toronto, Garrett Perkins in Kingston, Ont., and Peter Dias in Victoria.
