When the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel was recently renovated, owner Ivanhoé Cambridge decided to do away with the old penthouse suites on the top floor of the downtown Montreal hotel. The idea was “if we’re going to do something that changes the perspective of the hotel, we’re going to need to use the best floor,” says Jean Pelland of Sid Lee Architecture.

Canadian cities rank high in attracting tech talent
Toronto remains North America’s fastest growing technology market, while Ottawa has the largest concentration of tech talent, according to CBRE’s annual “Scoring Tech Talent” report. “Relative to the U.S., Canada is a cost-effective place for technology companies to operate,” said CBRE Canada executive managing director Paul Morassutti, noting the low value of the Canadian dollar.
Crown buys Pearson Corporate Centre in Etobicoke
Crown Realty Partners has acquired Pearson Corporate Centre in Etobicoke, Ont. from a Bentall Kennedy fund for $63.5 million. “We’re quite excited about Pearson Corporate Centre, given its location within the airport employment zone,” said Crown investments partner Emily Hanna.

About 10 years ago, you’d often see new condo investor marketing pieces with projected unit carrying costs that would spell out the monthly mortgage payment, condo fee, taxes and expected rental rate at completion. Expectations also remain high for 2018, according to Altus Group Data Solutions senior director Matthew Boukall. He gave that rosy forecast in front of a large audience at Toronto’s Ritz-Carlton Ballroom on Jan. 26 as part of the company’s 10th annual state-of-the-market event.
