Toyota Canada Inc. plans to invest $300 million in Canada to build 657,000 square feet of real estate during the next three years; a new Toronto head office and parts distribution centres in Calgary and Richmond, B.C.

The planned 225,000-square-foot head office is to be sited on the same land as its current Toronto headquarters at 1 Toyota Place.

There, the Japanese automaker looks to unite its various divisions, such as sales, marketing, distribution, service and training activities, under one roof. Toyota Credit Canada Inc., based in Markham, is also expected to be relocated to the new building.

The two parts distribution centres planned for Western Canada are designed to replace the company's Western Canada Parts Distribution Centre in Richmond. Both are scheduled to begin operations in 2028.

The plan for the British Columbia Parts Distribution Centre is a building of 210,000 operating square feet, built on an 8.1-acre parcel of land located in South Campbell Heights in Surrey. Its Alberta counterpart will be larger, at 222,000 operating square feet, and built on a 13.5-acre parcel of land in Calgary.

The investment “represents a significant investment in our future in Canada – our business, our people, and our long-term success,” Cyril Dimitris, president and CEO of Toyota Canada, said in the Monday afternoon announcement.

Growth the focus of new distribution centres

Toyota Canada expects the two parts distribution centres to provide more space for growth, more than tripling the space the company has today and shortening delivery times for its dealerships and customers in Western Canada.

The British Columbia Parts Distribution Centre would grant easy access to major transportation routes, allowing Toyota Canada to better service Toyota and Lexus dealerships and customers in the province. The Alberta centre would be close to Calgary International Airport and major highways, enabling the company to better service dealerships and customers across Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

“This investment is part of Toyota’s ongoing commitment to Canada,” Dimitris said, “creating spaces and operations that improve how we support our dealers and customers, encourage collaboration and enable continued growth across our business.”

Toyota Canada maintains regional offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Halifax, with parts distribution centres in Clarington, Ont. (just outside Toronto) and Vancouver.

Its Canadian manufacturing facilities are located in the communities of Cambridge and Woodstock, both not far from Toronto, totalling 5.4-million square feet of space across three production lines.

In December 2020, Toyota Canada opened its Clarington parts distribution centre. The 350,000 square-foot facility is built on a 30-acre parcel of land in Bowmanville, east of Toronto and Oshawa. Its location provides the company access to major transportation routes that help it serve Toyota and Lexus dealerships from Manitoba to Newfoundland.

Toyota Canada maintains a network of 287 Toyota and Lexus dealerships across Canada.
