Canada’s other CN Tower stands tall in Edmonton
When it opened in 1966, Edmonton’s CN Tower was the city’s first skyscraper and Western Canada’s tallest office building. The 27-storey downtown International-style structure was an early example of podium/tower design. With the city’s CN passenger train terminal at its base, the building was a bustling hub activity housing CN’s Edmonton offices.
Toronto Waterfront Innovation Centre signs anchor tenant
Data services provider WPP has signed on as the anchor tenant for the Waterfront Innovation Centre, a 400,000-square-foot-plus office development which will bring more than 2,000 employees to Toronto’s waterfront. “Having beachfront offices in Toronto is extremely rare,” said Sean Menkes, development manager for Menkes Developments.
Montreal industrial sale sets benchmark price
GWL Realty Advisors is spending $49.25 million to buy five industrial buildings in Laval which Jones Lang LaSalle executive Scott Speirs calls the “best quality industrial to come to market in Quebec in more than five years.” The class-A industrial buildings, with a total of 391,937 square feet, were sold by “a major pension fund” represented by Montreal-based Triovest.
Hollyburn purchases Vancouver’s Shorehill Building
Hollyburn Properties Limited has purchased the Shorehill Building at 1155 W. Pender St. in Vancouver and will move its head office there in early 2020. “Along with apartment properties and land for development of apartment properties, Hollyburn is actively seeking new asset classes like office and industrial,” said Hollyburn general manager Allan Wasel.
The People Space: New execs at CT REIT, RBC real estate, AY Montreal
Lesley Gibson will take over as chief financial officer at CT Real Estate Investment Trust when its current CFO, Louis Forbes, retires later this year. Forbes has served in the position since CT REIT’s initial public offering in 2013. During his tenure, CT REIT has increased its distribution four times in four years and has delivered a total return to unitholders of over 70 per cent.
Six months ago: Enwave expands thermal energy system to The Well
Enwave Energy Corporation has teamed with Allied Properties REIT and RioCan REIT to build a thermal energy storage facility under The Well mixed-use development in Toronto’s downtown west. “We have a number of unique types of deals with this thermal battery concept, but this is first one we’ve done in Toronto,” said Enwave East Region president and CEO Carlyle Coutinho.
One year ago: Aspen gets creative at Calgary Encana Place
A soaring vacancy rate in the Calgary downtown office market is forcing some landlords to be creative in attracting and retaining tenants. Aspen Properties, for example, is transforming the former Encana Place Tower, across the street from the Fairmont Palliser Hotel, to include a social gathering spot stocked with a keg a beer, a unique area where pet owners can bring their dogs for the day and several areas for recreational activity.
