REITs are no TSX lightweight, RBC report
The recent move to make Real Estate its own standalone sector on the Toronto Stock Exchange main trading index is a potential game changer. In its quarterly REIT review and outlook, RBC Dominion Securities noted that taking real estate out of the financial services sector is a recognition that listed real estate companies have characteristics which are unique within the Financials sector.
Confidence is high in Toronto office sector
There was an aura of confidence emanating from the four panelists discussing the downtown Toronto office market at The Real Estate Strategy & Leasing Conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Oct. 6. And with a three per cent vacancy rate in the core, who could blame them?
The greenest option for 564 Beatty Street
The greenest office building is the one that doesn’t get built. The act of tearing down an office tower to erect a new one in its place eats up a lot of resources and creates a lot of waste, said Colin Scarlett, an executive vice-president with Colliers International in Vancouver.
Retailers using food as a customer enticement
“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” is a phrase that’s been around for decades. One gal’s Manhattan retail reality
I was fortunate to take in a last minute trip to New York this month. As a first-timer to the Big Apple I had a list of things I wanted to see and do. Like many women, I craved the shopping. The brands, the designers, the looks you just can’t get in little old Saskatoon.
Six months ago: A tale of three office markets

That’s the quick snapshot of the office markets of Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver respectively, that were the focus of a panel discussion at this week’s Land & Development conference held in Toronto.
One year ago: Business as usual with Killam’s REIT conversion
Shareholder preferences are the driving force behind Killam Properties Inc.’s proposed conversion to a REIT structure, rather than any underlying changes to its strategy, portfolio or operations. The Halifax-based real estate company (KMP-T) announced earlier this month shareholders will have their say on the conversion in a December vote.
