While development land continues to become more scarce and expensive in Canada’s major cities, deals are still being done and buildings are being built. Canderel senior vice-president Richard Diamond moderated a panel of four industry experts to discuss land sales and market conditions at the May 15 Land & Development Conference.
Minto files IPO for Minto Apartment REIT
Minto Properties has filed a preliminary prospectus for an initial public offering of shares to create the Minto Apartment REIT. The REIT will take over an initial portfolio of 22 income-producing, multi-residential rental properties from Minto Properties. The 4,279 suites are located in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton.
Burnaby suddenly Metro Vancouver office hot spot: CBRE
Metro Vancouver’s hot office market is helping to stoke investment demand in the suburbs, says CBRE, pointing to several of its recent deals outside of the downtown core. Suburban office sales led the market in the first quarter of this year, with CBRE reporting 14 closed deals on suburban office buildings. The firm said it closed on eight such deals in all of 2017.
Edmonton’s downtown a study in transformation
The move to rejuvenate downtown cores is evident in many cities, but few could boast as much activity, for their relative size, as Edmonton. Home to just under a million people, the city is awash in both cranes and surveyors these days. If you wanted to study a downtown in transition, this might not be a bad place to start.
ENMAX to build District Energy Centre in Edmonton
The success of Calgary’s eight-year-old District Energy Centre has ENMAX looking to build a similar centralized heating system in Edmonton. The District Energy Centre in Calgary, located in the East Village just outside the downtown core, produces heat for distribution to buildings in the downtown and East Village.

Six months ago: ICE District leads downtown Edmonton revival
The ICE District is leading a rejuvenation in downtown Edmonton — and making a major impression in the city’s office market. “The concept is resonating with everybody,” says Glen Scott, President of Katz Group Real Estate, which is developing the 25-acre, mixed-use site. “It’s the reboot of the downtown of Edmonton.”
One year ago: Longueuil seeks $3B in downtown investment
Longueuil plans to have a major new downtown by 2035 that will be built around its existing Metro station. “It’s the type of project that comes only once in a lifetime,” Longueuil mayor Caroline St-Hilaire told a business audience at the Montreal Board of Trade’s recent Strategic Forum on Major Real Estate Projects.
