Finally! Former Winnipeg Target store gets new life
When Shindico landed the first urban-format Target in Canada in 2013, it was supposed to be the finest of feathers in the cap for one of Manitoba’s largest and most successful developers. The two-storey, 133,000-square-foot structure constructed on the former Canad Inns Stadium site—the former home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers–would be a flagship for the development and real estate management company, which started modestly more than 40 years ago in Portage la Prairie.
Bourbonnais departs, Cunningham new CEO at PSP Investments
The Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments) has a new man at the top. Prior to today’s appointment, Cunningham was senior vice president, global head of real estate and natural resources at PSP Investments. Bourbonnais is leaving to head up a new initiative within Blackrock Alternative Investors, PSP Investments said in a release announcing the changes.
Two new office developments in Vancouver’s Railtown
A Vancouver-based developer is planning to build two new office buildings in the historic Railtown district. Brian Roche, founder of Rendition Developments, said the company has plans for a seven-level, 152,000-square-foot building called The Maker Exchange as well as a six-level, 36,000-square-foot building called Bench. “It’s the first new buildings to be in Railtown in probably 40 years,” he said.
Dunpar enters Toronto rental market with The Ossington
While Dunpar Homes has been building houses across the GTA for more than 30 years, The Ossington is its first purpose-built rental development. Dunpar purchased the site in 2007 to build condominium townhomes. Delays in getting approvals and a gentrifying neighbourhood, however, persuaded Dunpar to build 54 luxury rental townhomes.

Suburban growth vs. urban densification
We tend to support societal arguments that align with our own special interests. We want what we want, but are not prepared to see the other side of our position. We align ourselves with special interest groups that agree with our view of the world. According to 2016 census data, 53.6 per cent of Canadians live in single family homes. Saskatchewan, at 72.7 per cent is second only to Newfoundland and Labrador at 73.3 per cent.
Six months ago: Toronto-Dominion Centre still on top at 50
Toronto’s iconic Toronto-Dominion Centre has just turned 50 but it hardly needs to worry about going through a midlife crisis. Instead of kvetching about old age and retirement, or buying the commercial real estate equivalent of a convertible, the massive mixed-use development in the centre of Toronto’s financial district has been basking in international acclaim this year.
One year ago: Office staging a force that’s here to stay
“Staging” houses so they make a good first impression has long been a way of trying to sell them faster and for higher prices. Now that trend is becoming more common in office leasing, and both landlords and tenants seem to be reaping benefits from the practice.
