CPPIB real estate assets top $42.8B in 2017
Net assets for the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) have grown to $337.1 billion Cdn after a very busy year of real estate activity which now comprises 12.7 per cent of the total portfolio or $42.8 billion. Real assets, which combine commercial real estate, infrastructure and agricultural land, reached $75.3 billion and 22.3 per cent of the total CPP Fund at the end of 2017.
CT REIT assembles an entire Calgary block
CT REIT’s ability to acquire a full block of prime Calgary industrial real estate came about, in part, due to its unique relationship with Canadian Tire Corp., says CEO Ken Silver. During an interview with RENX, Silver discussed the two-year process which resulted in the REIT compiling what he has called a piece of “fabulous real estate.”
Real estate gender parity a slow process
While the presence of women in C-suites and boardrooms in the Canadian real estate industry is even more rare than in the rest of the Canadian corporate world, steps are slowly being taken to remedy the situation. “I’ll admit that we’re not getting this right as a society, as an industry or at Oxford,” said Oxford Properties president and chief executive officer Blake Hutcheson.
PIRET shareholders to vote on Blackstone takeover
Shareholders of Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust (PIRET) will decide at a special meeting called for March 23 whether to approve Blackstone Property Partners’ $3.8 billion bid to take the trust private. Management sent out notice of the meeting this week, along with an information package about the pending acquisition.
GBCI Canada launched to advance green buildings
The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) have formed GBCI Canada to accelerate the pace of green building initiatives across the country. “It’s a Canadian for-profit company and is led by Canadians,” said Thomas Mueller, the CaGBC president and chief executive officer who also assumes the same roles with GBCI Canada.
B.C. moving fast on green building initiatives: Panel
British Columbia’s commitment to the green building market is accelerating at a rate that would likely surprise even the keenest of observers, Vancouver’s Board of Change heard at a recent panel discussion. “I don’t think anyone in this room can perceive of how rapidly [the sustainable building market] is changing in a very significant way in B.C.,” said panelist Sean Pander, Vancouver’s manager of green buildings. “I don’t think you would want to change it any faster than it is already happening.”

One year ago: BTB aims to make more noise selling, acquiring
Look to see more announcements from BTB REIT in 2017. The Montreal-based trust (BTB.UN-T) had a quiet 2016, focusing on internal housekeeping such as reducing its debt level and shaving its borrowing costs. Its biggest deal of the year didn’t even involve buying or selling assets, coming in the form of a $33-million share offering in June.
