Artis CEO says capital recycling program ‘not done yet’
Artis Real Estate Investment Trust continued its capital recycling program in 2017, disposing of 23 properties and reducing its exposure in Alberta to maximize unitholder value. “We’ve made meaningful improvements to our portfolio and strategic position, and we’re not done yet,” president and CEO Armin Martens said during a March 2 conference call.
RioCan Living: REIT’s new brand keeps it ‘ahead of the curve’
RioCan REIT senior vice president Jonathan Gitlin says the new Riocan Living brand creates a distinct unit that will focus on the trust’s plans to redevelop 43 retail properties during the next seven-to-10 years. Gitlin told RENX the goal is to make those properties “more resilient and future proof and ultimately more valuable.”
RioCan Living launches as REIT’s residential developer
RioCan REIT (REI.UN) has taken the next step in its program to redevelop dozens of its retail properties across Canada, announcing Monday its new residential brand, RioCan Living. RioCan Living will drive the trust’s efforts to turn selected existing retail shopping centres into mixed-use communities. In a release announcing the move, RioCan says this marks its “official, and permanent, entry into the residential market”.
Crown, Crestpoint acquire entire block with Toronto DEC purchase
UPDATED with interview, quotes, background: Crown Realty Partners and Crestpoint Real Estate Investments have acquired an entire city block with their $167-million purchase of the Toronto Dundas-Edward Centre from NorthWest Healthcare Properties REIT. The new owners plan both physical improvements and a new leasing strategy in order to maximize returns on the buildings.
Invesque to buy medical office building owner Mohawk REIT
Health properties owner Invesque Inc. (IVQ.U) continued its aggressive expansion on Friday morning, announcing it will acquire Canadian-owned Mohawk Medical Properties Real Estate Investment Trust for approximately $180 million. Mohawk REIT owns 14 multi-tenant medical office buildings in seven markets throughout Canada and the U.S.
Used oil wells may heat Alberta town’s buildings
Calgary-based Epoch Energy Development is conducting an extensive research and feasibility study to see if a Geothermal District Energy System is viable in the Town of Hinton in Alberta. The study, supported by all three levels of government, is looking at a proposed system that would produce renewable geothermal heat from marginally-producing oil and gas wells to heat the town’s public buildings.

The final phase of William’s Court at Kanata Lakes, the largest rental apartment complex built in Canada in more than 40 years, has been sold by developer Francis Lépine’s Lépine Corporation to Killam Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust and KingSett Capital.
