Toronto-Dominion Centre on top of its game at 50
Toronto’s iconic Toronto-Dominion Centre has just turned 50 but it hardly needs to worry about going through a midlife crisis. Instead of kvetching about old age and retirement, or buying the commercial real estate equivalent of a convertible, the massive mixed-use development in the centre of Toronto’s financial district has been basking in international acclaim this year.
CF Shops at Don Mills completes renovations
Cadillac Fairview has completed major renovations to a large number of its shopping centres over the past four years, and can now add Toronto’s CF Shops at Don Mills to that list. “While ‘experience’ has become the new theme at a lot of retail, CF Shops at Don Mills is an open-air mall and had to be approached differently,” said Cadillac Fairview senior vice-president of development Niall Collins
Winnipeg’s Chief Peguis Trail extension a road to development
Major infrastructure projects in Canada’s big cities usually take a number of years to complete. Winnipeg’s proposed inner ring road has been decades in the making. SmartREIT, Strathallen to acquire OneREIT in $1.1B deal
SmartREIT and Strathallen Acquisitions Inc., announced Friday morning they have agreements to acquire OneREIT and take the trust’s assets private. The transaction, valued at $1.1 billion, will be financed through cash and units of SmartREIT, the firms said in a release. It is the outcome of OneREIT’s strategic review process, which was first announced in June 2016.
Strong economy buoys Halifax apartment market

The only thing driving Canada’s housing market? Supply and demand
I read a story in the Financial Times recently with a rather misleading headline, “Covered bonds: The European link to Canada’s house price boom.” The headline suggests investment in these bonds is somehow serving to drive Canada’s housing boom, which is flatly not the case.
Six months ago: New CEO leads Lanesborough’s Alberta comeback
Given its heavy exposure to Alberta’s economy and the fire-ravaged epicentre of Fort McMurray in particular, it has been a challenging couple of years for Lanesborough REIT. The job of chief executive of the REIT remains the same as it has for the past few years but the person in the role has changed.
One year ago: Multi-res prez sees growth ahead for Timbercreek
Considering the fact that Timbercreek Asset Management has built up a $3.5 billion multi-residential portfolio in the past 15-plus years, it should be no surprise to hear its new multi-residential division president promising more growth in the future.
