Sidewalk Toronto ‘fundamentally different’ urban approach
There’s a lot of curiosity surrounding Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto’s Sidewalk Toronto effort to create a new kind of mixed-use community on the city’s eastern waterfront. Sidewalk Labs head of development Josh Sirefman was interviewed by Uber Canada’s Adam Blinick to shed a bit more light on the project at the May 15 Land & Development Conference.

The oil price collapse which began in the latter half of 2014 triggered a skyrocketing downtown office vacancy rate in Calgary’s skyscrapers and a new reality for the market going forward. With the vacancy rate still hovering in the north of 25 per cent range, it’s not going to be anytime soon that Calgary’s commercial real estate market gets down to a balanced level.
39 Niagara rentals complement Minto Toronto Westside condos
Buy or rent. Residents of a new enclave being constructed by Minto Capital Management Inc. in Toronto’s Downtown West District will have both options following the announcement of the 39 Niagara tower. The apartment building will complement its neighbouring Minto Westside condominiums said Minto vice-president Paul Baron.
Condo-like theme to Minto’s Ottawa apartment renos
Minto Group is taking a few pointers from Ottawa’s downtown condo market as it renovates two of its Centretown rental buildings, the eight- and nine-story The James and The Gilmour. “It’s a very vibrant neighbourhood which, over the last 10 or 15 years, has been a natural site for intensification with condos,” said Minto’s Ben Mullen.

The Government of Canada is trying to lead by example in meeting the country’s sustainability commitments. In an effort to show the private sector it can be done, Natural Resources Canada (NRC) is setting energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals for its buildings higher than the bar set for the rest of the country.
Can affordable housing and rapid mass transit co-exist?
Rapid mass transit is often regarded as the prescription for cities suffering from traffic congestion. A way for urbanites to give up the expense of owning a vehicle. But that convenience comes with a price – land values around transit nodes jump in value. These nodes become prime locations for mixed-use development.
Six months ago: Boardwalk plans to add up to 15,000 apartments
Boardwalk REIT is forging ahead with a plan to grow its overall portfolio in strategic locations, providing it with more geographic diversification. Sam Kolias, chairman and CEO of Boardwalk, said the last two years of a very difficult Western Canadian economy and the introduction of a significant number of new luxury apartment rentals have taught it many lessons.
One year ago: 16 York breaks ground in Toronto’s South Core
A downtown Toronto office tower that broke ground at 16 York St. on Wednesday is the first to be built on spec by Cadillac Fairview since the developer was purchased by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan in 2000. CF is building the $479-million, 32-storey building in financial partnership with the Ontario Pension Board.
