Killam continues to diversify outside Atlantic Canada
Recent acquisitions of residential properties in Carleton Place, Ont., Calgary and Edmonton are moving Killam Apartment REIT closer to its goal of having 50 per cent of annualized net operating income generated from outside of Atlantic Canada. Philip Fraser, president and CEO of the Halifax-based REIT, told RENX with the recent transactions about 29 per cent of its NOI will be generated from outside of its base.
Investors still chasing Calgary office assets
The renewed appeal of commercial real estate investment which took hold in Calgary in mid-2016 has continued in 2018, according to Barclay Street Real Estate. The company, in its mid-year analysis, reports a 23 per cent year-over-year increase in dollar volume, with total sales of assets worth more than $1 million jumping to $1.26 billion.
Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver dominate office construction: AY
As office vacancy rates continue to tighten in Canada’s largest markets, almost 13 million of the country’s more-than-15-million square feet of office space under construction is concentrated in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, a mid-year report from Avison Young reveals. The largest share of that space, by far, is in Toronto where 8.5 million square feet of space are under development.

Choice Properties REIT has set itself on a course of redevelopment, diversification and expansion with its $6 billion purchase of Canadian REIT’s sizeable portfolio of assets. “We’ve always had an ambition to really establish Choice Properties as a real estate entity on its own,” said Galen Weston, partiarch of the Weston family which controls Choice, Loblaw and George Weston Ltd.
One year ago: The Bow prominent on Calgary sublease market
When the Bow tower was built in 2012 in the heart of Calgary, it was a symbol to the rest of the world the city was an economic powerhouse. The just under two-million-square-foot, 58-storey skyscraper, the tallest one west of Toronto at the time, was Encana’s signature headquarters building in the oilpatch, illustrating the company’s success and the city’s stature on the global energy front.
